4 Tips For Taking Care Of Your Large Machines

If your business uses any large machines, you are going to want to make sure that you take proper care of your machines. Here are four tips that will help you keep your expensive large machinery in good shape.

#1 Keep Track Of When You Use The Machinery

To start off with, you are going to want to keep track of when you operate your machinery and who is operating it. You are going to want to keep a daily use log, where the time that the machinery is used is recorded. If the machinery requires a person to operate it, you are also going to want to include that information on the log.

Keeping track of who is using the machinery will allow you to know who to talk to if something happens with the machinery. It will also allow you to see the skill level of each individual working on the machinery and allow you to provide targeted training if necessary.

Keeping track of how much and how often you use your machinery will help you stay on top of maintenance for it.

#2 Develop A Maintenance Schedule

Using your daily usage logs, try to figure out when your machinery is going to need to be repaired. For example, if the oil needs to be changed every 1000 hours, and you can see that you the machinery 50 hours a week, that means you are going to need to change the oil every twenty weeks.

Develop a set schedule for when to do routine and major maintenance for your machinery, and be sure to add dates for purchasing and ordering the equipment that you will need for the maintenance and repairs.

#3 Clean Your Equipment

One of the easiest ways to prevent your large machinery from needing major repairs is by cleaning your equipment. Cleaning your equipment on a regular basis will prevent dust and particles from getting into your equipment and wearing down the the different parts. Additionally, cleaning your equipment on a regular basis will allow you to prevent corrosion from developing.

You are going to want to create a cleaning and lubricating protocol for each piece of large equipment that you have. Then, train the individuals who work on the machinery on the cleaning protocol. You may have daily and weekly cleaning tasks for each of your large pieces of equipment. Make sure that you have a cleaning and lubricating log, so you can keep track of how often your machinery is cleaned.

#4 Regularly Inspect Your Equipment

Finally, make sure that in addition to cleaning your equipment, you also develop a schedule for inspecting your equipment. This can happen on more of a monthly basis. Inspecting your equipment for wear and tear at least once a month is a great way to spot maintenance issues and take care of them early on, before additional issues develop.
